McLaren Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo Announced!

If you’ve been paying attention to your motor news lately, McLaren Automotive’s new Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo car has caused quite a stir, and if you’re anything like us, it’s pretty easy to see why!

For those still out of the loop, in a response to video game creator Kazunori Yamauchi’s call for vehicle manufacturers to design “visionary GT cars,” McLaren’s Ultimate Vision was brought to life, with some collaboration in development from Yamauchi himself, for competition in the upcoming highly anticipated PlayStation 4 title, Gran Turismo Sport, who’s debut took place on October 17th!

Now this vehicle is not a prototype for any future McLaren model, but what it does do is provide us with an spectacular look toward the future with what McLaren could be capable of producing beyond the year 2030 focusing on technological excellence and their inherent principles such as a continued commitment to putting the driver first. The McLaren Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo also utilizes carbon fiber construction with Integrated Active Aero features, pioneering central prone driving position and a 1,150 horsepower hybrid powertrain, among other things, making it one extreme race car!

McLaren Automotive’s very own Design Director, Rob Melville, had this to say about the design experience, “We wanted to break new ground and to innovate and the McLaren Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo does exactly that. It puts the driver absolutely at the center of the action, delivering a sensory overload with incredible sound and awe-inspiring acceleration. From the game player’s point of view, the driving experience in this car will be like nothing else: the amazing glass cockpit and the motorcycle-like driving position – with your head far forward, almost right above the front axle – combine to allow you to see exactly where the apex of the corner is so you can shave vital milliseconds off each lap. More than anything though, the McLaren Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo is a stunning looking car. The design form communicates exactly what the car’s mission is and what its intentions are: it’s the ultimate expression of the McLaren design pillars and principles we have already established, future into the 2030s.”

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Gran Turismo’s creator and President of Polyphony Digital Inc, shared some choice words on bringing the whole project together, “I created the Vision Gran Turismo project to give car manufacturers the opportunity to design something that has all of the characteristics of their brand, and will live on as a playable vehicle in Gran Turismo. Many of the cars have become legendary in their own right, continuing to shine for years and attracting players from different eras. For me, a car needs to be an extension of the driver; I am focused not just on the appearance, but on the handling, the sound of the engine, and the feeling you get when you are racing. So, it was an honour to work with McLaren to bring the Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo to life, and to put such a car on the circuits of Gran Turismo Sport for players to enjoy driving at the limit.”

As we stated before, Gran Turismo Sport, the latest title to be released in the famous Gran Turismo franchise for PlayStation, is right around the corner, and it gives players the ability to choose their preferred car from a slew of production and concept vehicles to compete in any one of 17 world-class circuits including Brands Hatch as well as the 24-hour Nürburgring!

Although the McLaren Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo, just like the other Vision GT concepts that have come to fruition, will only be available in the digital space, you can’t help but dream about one day getting your hands on one.

Remember the movie “Minority Report?” Well, it seems that technology is already here. I mean, I know everyone’s got touch screens these days, but this just blows me away. Imagine when the day comes that we can browse the internet and flip through holograms that are projected into our living rooms, now all I need is that cool microwave on the jetsons that made any dish you wanted!

Once again it’s the annual gathering of the nerds, comic-geeks, superheroes, scantily clad women, and fanboys! This year has been extremely busy for us in the CAPD and only a couple of Maisto heads were able to make it out. I had my lightsaber ready to go, but sadly did not have time to attend this year. I’m sorry, but it looks like you will have to wait till next year to see the “ghetto jedi”. These photos were taken courtesy of Julia. Thanks Julez!

HULK SMASH little nerd boys!!!!

Uncle Sam Rolls In a 100-MPG Solar Plug-In Hybrid

Sign me up for a 100-MPG vehicle…but my only question is, when are they gonna make these dang things look a little cooler? Why are all the eco-friendly, fuel efficient, electric/hybrid vehicles so dorky looking?  I mean if we put a little design effort or made the cars look a little more serious, maybe people would be lining up for them? Just my 2¢.

Tony Markel drives a plug-in hybrid that runs 50 miles per charge, goes 100 miles per gallon and gets power from the sun. If he has his way, you’ll drive one too before long.

His 2006 Prius has a lithium-ion battery six times more powerful than the nickel-metal hydride pack Toyota put in it. But what makes the car really cool is the solar panel on the roof. It generates enough juice to go 5 miles.

Markel is a senior engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. He and his colleagues have been experimenting with the car for about a year in a quest to make lithium-ion batteries cheaper and more durable. “Those are the barriers — battery cost and battery life,” he says. “That’s the main thing holding the technology back.”

The way he sees it, though, the barriers won’t stand much longer.

Hello CASTRO, Where Do You Want To Go Today?

KITT Car: Knight Rider Themed GPS Unit

You know sometimes you’re sitting there at work browsing the web (researching for work of course), and you come across a crown jewel of sorts in the midst of the same old boring junk. Like this Knight Rider themed GPS. It is an in-car unit which delivers turn by turn instructions in the genuine voice of KITT, aka voice actor William Daniels.

This GPS, from satnav maker Mio, also added some killer red swooping lights as seen on the front of KITT. According to Autoblog, the unit will actually ask “Hello Michael, where do you want to go today?” when powered up. How friggin cool is that? It makes me only wish my name was Michael!

It’s not out yet, but will be $270 when available.

So the tables turn a little now that our boys are back on their home turf! Vujacic (the machine) and Kobe held this one down and Gasol kept the green at bay! No offense to our Boston friends or collectors, but what a game, huh? It was sure close, but I wouldn’t count our L.A. boys out just yet. Growing up in Southern California, it’s always been about the local L.A. teams. Through both the good and the very bad times, I’ve always been a loyal fan. Sure I like some other teams, but in the end the City of Angels always has my heart. See you in game 4!

3G iPhone….WHAT?

Apple introduces the new iPhone 3G

The new iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking, built-in GPS, and iPhone 2.0 software that supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs hundreds of third party applications built with the iPhone SDK. Available in 22 countries on July 11, iPhone 3G comes in two models: an 8GB model priced at $199 (US) and a 16GB model priced at $299 (US).

Yes, I was one of the first to rush out and buy the 1st generation iPhone, and it really didn’t bother me when they dropped the price shortly after. The rest of the CAPD soon followed the dream that is owning the coolest damn phone on the planet! I am so looking forward to the 2.0 software update. The new price drop and upgrades are making me drool a little. We are a little gadget crazy over here, so we thought we’d share the awesomeness! This makes us here in the CAPD very excited. I think I’ll take 2!
